Dare to Serve

2014 Work as Worship

How do you create a workplace environment where people are treated with respect and dignity yet challenged to perform at the highest level? In this 30-minute session from the 2014 Work as Worship Conference, Cheryl Bachelder shares how to drive superior results in your organization by serving others.

Cheryl is the CEO of AFC Enterprises, Inc., the parent company of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen. She has more than 30 years of experience in brand building, operations and management at companies like KFC, Domino's Pizza, RJR Nabisco and The Procter & Gamble Company.

Cheryl defined a "dare to serve" leader as one who is "courageous enough to lead to a daring destination and humble enough to selflessly serve others." How does your leadership reflect a dare to serve leader? How could you improve?

Cheryl talked about the "Roadmap to Results" that she and her leadership team implemented at Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen.
  • Build a Distinct Brand
  • Create Memorable Experiences
  • Grow Restaurant Profits
  • Accelerate Quality Restaurants

What is your organization's roadmap for success? How are the strategy and steps to accomplish those strategies being communicated? How have you seen the benefit of communicating strategies (or the detriment in non-communication of strategy and purpose)?

Cheryl also noted that their purpose is to inspire servant leaders to achieve superior results. They do this by:
  • the way they work together.
  • being passionate about what they do.
  • listening carefully and learning continuously.
  • being fact-based and plan-ful.
  • measuring results.
  • coaching and developing people.
  • being accountable.
  • valuing humility.

In your context and position, how do you inspire servant leaders to achieve superior results? What in this list do you do well? Where could you improve? How will you implement your ideas?

Who is the best leader you've met? Why were they so good? Did they take a risk for you…teach you new skills…give tough love…come alongside you during difficulty? What did they do for you?

Cheryl challenged us to be on mission for God in the workplace…to be the courageous people in the marketplace that selflessly serve the people God has entrusted in our care. How are you being that kind of leader for somebody else? How are you training up better leaders? How are you bringing up someone to their full potential?
