Using Profits to be Prophets

2014 Work as Worship Conference

In this 36-minute session from the 2014 Work as Worship Conference, Brian Fikkert challenges the business community to passionately use its profits to prophetically point toward the kingdom that is both now and not yet. Brian is the Executive Director of the Chalmers Center for Economic Development. He has published articles in leading academic and popular journals and is co-author of When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty without Hurting the Poor and Yourself.

At the beginning of the video, Brian will ask you to write down the answers to two questions. You can use the following spaces to type your answers before you watch the video:

Brian identified the tendency to either blame poverty on systemic injustices OR on personal sin. In the past have you viewed one or the other as the major contributor? Why is understanding both personal and systemic contributions to poverty vital if we are going to help the poor?

How does your own experience as a broken person help you relate to and serve the materially poor?

How is the Lord calling you to leverage your position and skill as a businessperson to minister to the materially poor?

A crucial part of God's calling of Abraham in Genesis 12 was the revelation that God would bless Abraham (and his offspring) so that he might be a blessing. The Lord has not blessed you in business or as a leader just for your financial benefit. He's blessed you with resources and influence so that you might bless others and bring glory to His name.  Prayerfully consider how the Lord might be calling you to bless the poor.
