Our Role in the Mission of God

2014 RightNow Conference

In this 30-minute session from the 2014 RightNow Conference, D.A. Horton reminds us of the culture-transcending power of the gospel, sharing that the church's mission is to translate God's Word in the context He's called us to. D.A. is a church planter and author of G.O.S.P.E.L.  He currently serves as the National Coordinator for Urban Student Missions at the North American Mission Board.

Have you ever experienced a desire for God to join your mission instead of asking Him what your role in His mission is? What do you think is at the root of a desire to seek our own mission above God's?

“Our role in the mission of God is simple: we translate his word, God transforms our hearts, because the gospel transcends all cultures.”

Think about your particular ministry context. What language are you seeking to translate God's word into? (Think along cultural lines, not literal language. Do you preach to an urban context? Immigrant population? Students? Bible belt?)

What particular difficulties does your context present to effectively translating God's Word? (For example, people in the Bible belt might think they know what the Bible is saying, but be deaf or hardened to its true meaning.)

D.A. described our tendency to affirm salvation by grace alone through faith alone, but how we work as though our ministry methods are what saves. Do you ever put more stock in how you do ministry than in the Holy Spirit who transforms hearts? What points you, personally, back to the reality that you are totally dependent on the Holy Spirit to perform ministry?

The mission of God is centered on His grace. As you translate God's Word into your context, the message you proclaim must start and end with the gospel. It is the gospel message that has the power to save. As you do the work of ministry, work confidently knowing that it is God who transforms hearts.
