The Great Commission

16Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.17And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.18And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them inthe name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,20teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Dr. Evans explained two types of authority:
  1. Dunamis - the explosive authority/power of God
  2. Exousia - delegated authority in the proper hands

In Matthew 28:18, Jesus declares exousia has been given to him. What are the ramifications of this type of authority? Why is this significant to you personally? Why is this significant to your church/ministry?

Dr. Evans said: “The goal of the gospel is the creating of disciples. If we're not creating disciples, we're not fulfilling the goal of the gospel.” How does this line up with your ministry? Is there anything you need to do to focus your ministry on creating disciples? What are some specific next steps?

Dr. Evans explained that a disciple was a learner. A disciple is someone who picks up a worldview from another. Can you give a specific example of someone who discipled you? In what ways did you adopt their worldview? What are you doing to intentionally pass on a Christian worldview to someone else through discipleship?

Dr. Evans explained the the Great Commission gives us a clue on how to make disciples.
  1.  Go
  2. Baptize
  3. Teach

Take some time to think about how your ministry is doing in each of these areas. Which area are you strongest at and why? What area do you need to grow in? Is there someone in your ministry that can lead out in any of these specific areas?

Dr. Evans concluded by saying that "if you want a ministry that will be impact-full, then you must be a disciple maker." He explained that Jesus statement that "I, even I will be with you" is something that should give you great confidence in the ministry of disciple making. Take some time to pray about the disciple making ministry in your church. Pray for the areas you listed above that need a little work. Thank God for the areas you listed that are strong. Pray for the specific people in your ministry that are leading out.
