The Three "P"s

Work as Worship 2014

The world will tell you that in order to be successful, you need three things: education, capital, and a business plan. Anne Beiler, Founder of Auntie Anne’s®, had none of those. In this 38-minute session from the 2014 Work as Worship Conference, Anne Beiler talks about what she did have–purpose, a great product, and people–to build Auntie Anne’s® from one small Amish market stand to the world’s largest hand-rolled pretzel franchise.

Anne said, "We need the presence of God in our lives" and noted that when we make other things important, it pushes God out of our lives. How do you keep God present in your work life? What does that look like? Are there any ways that you are making other things, in any area of your life, more important than your relationship with God?

Psalm 40:1-3 (NASB)

1I waited patiently for the LORD;

And He inclined to me and heard my cry.

2He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay,

And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.

3He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God;

Many will see and fear

And will trust in the LORD.

Anne's personal journey illustrates how God uses broken people to do his work. She reminded us that broken people are all God has to work with! What feels broken in your life? How is/can God use that for his glory?

When Anne started her business, she didn't have a formal education, money or a business plan. But she did have: a purpose bigger than herself, a great product and great people. And she found that when she focused on those three small Ps, she experienced profit. She cautioned, "If you focus on profit first, you'll get sidetracked on your purpose."

What are you focusing on? Do you tend to focus on what you don't have? Is your fear bigger than your faith? What do you have that you can focus on?

Psalm 32:8 (NASB)

8I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go;

I will counsel you with My eye upon you.

Anne said that she uses the acronym LIGHT that has served her well in making decisions.
Lead with integrity
Invest in others
Give freely
Honor God
Treat all business contacts with respect

What is your grid for making decisions? Is there anything you'd add to this list? How does God enter into daily business decisions? What do you do well from Anne's list? What can you take away and incorporate in your own life?

Have a purpose bigger than yourself. Purpose will give you overcoming power, unbelievable passion and an influential position to be effective and glorify God.

You don't have to be famous to be effective, you just have to be faithful.
