Write Songs to the Glory of God

2013 Austin Stone Worship Conference

In this 12-minute session from the 2013 Austin Stone Worship Conference, Michael Bleecker recounts his personal journey from seeking to glorify himself through music, to seeking to glorify God and build up His Church through songwriting. Michael encourages others to take seriously the disciplines of songwriting, giving five imperatives for writing God-glorifying Christian songs. Michael is worship pastor at The Village Church in Flower Mound, TX. He has written and recorded numerous songs, and was a Dove Award nominee for the song Glorious Day.

Michael gave five imperatives for Christian songwriting:
  1. You need to be a Christian.
  2. You need to know the Bible.
  3. You need to be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
  4. You need to walk in humility.
  5. You need to be alive (experiencing laughter, weeping, mourning, joy, pain, etc.).

Michael found success as a songwriter when he shifted focus from seeking his own glory through music to seeking God's glory and the building-up of the church. How do you battle the temptation to seek your own glory in your music?

Think about the local church you minister to. What needs are they facing? How can you use God's Word as you seek to minister to their needs through your songs?

Michael challenged songwriters to let other pastors, or those who are theologically grounded, read the songs you've written. Who do you know that can read through your songs for theological insight? What fears or anxieties do you have about doing this?

The reality is, you may achieve significant success and acclaim through songwriting, even if you are doing it all for your own glory. On the other hand, no one outside the walls of your church may ever hear and be ministered to by your music, even if you are writing for His glory. Success, fame, acclaim cannot be your motivations as you write. The songs you write should be an overflow of what the Lord is working in your own heart, through His Word, for His glory, with the hopes of building up His people.
