Lead Yourself First

As leaders we always reproduce who we are. So to produce healthy leaders, you've got to first be a healthy leader yourself. In this post Dave Ferguson identifies four key areas to evaluate self-leadership, sharing his daily strategy to make sure he is growing as a leader. Dave is Lead Pastor of Community Christian Church, a multi-site congregation in the Chicago area. He is also author of numerous books, including Exponential: How You and Your Friends Can Start a Missional Church Movement.

What ministry leaders do you know that have suffered a moral failure or collapse of their ministry because of a lack of self-leadership? What can you learn from their mistakes?

Dave encouraged us to daily check our RPMS. To daily ask how am I doing:
  • Relationally
How is the relationship with my spouse? My children? My staff members?
  • Physically
Am I exercising? Am I being a good steward of my body?
  • Mentally
Am I learning, reading, growing in knowledge?
  • Spiritually
What is going on between me and God? Is there any unconfessed sin in my life?

Dave explained that he assigned a number for each RPMS category every day. Take a moment know and rate how you are doing in the following areas. 1=Poor and 5=Excellent.

How are you doing Relationally?

How are you doing Physically?

How are you doing Mentally?

How are you doing Spiritually?

What are the one or two areas where you feel the most urgent need for greater self-leadership?

How do you think you can take an active role in growing those areas of RPMS where you feel you are not doing well?

The half-completed building Dave spoke about early in the video is a testament to the profound tragedy that can result as a lack of self-leadership. It is so easy to get caught-up in status or ministry success that you lose sight of who God has called you to be, and what He's called you to do.

As a leader, when others look for a reason to quit, you find a reason to keep going. Let this motivational video serve as a challenge to step up to the gift and skills God has given you to lead, even when you feel like giving up.

Choose daily to keep going, to ask yourself the hard questions, trusting that the Lord will provide you with the grace and strength to lead others well.
