A Faith Like (Doubting) Thomas

Page 1

It is often in the midst of the most devastating circumstances that we can question the reality of God's love and existence. Brian and Jamie's son was born with severe heart problems that kept him in and out of hospitals with complicated surgeries. They were on a roller coaster of emotions and in constant prayer for his life. This heart-wrenching real-life story illustrates the doubt that we can experience, even as devoted followers of Christ.

On some level, we all experience doubt in God. Even Brian and Jamie, who had seen God do a miracle in Corban's life, struggled with complicated questions after he died. David Zahl knows what it means to doubt. In this post, he builds from the example of Thomas to show the compassion of Jesus for those who doubt. David is the College and Young Adult Minister at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlottesville, VA. He is also founder of Mockingbird Ministries and author of The Gospel According to Pixar.

At some point, or on some level, we all experience doubts. When are you most inclined to experience doubt about what you believe?

John 20:24-27 (ESV)

Jesus and Thomas

24Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came.25So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

26Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”27Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.”
