3 - What if I Don't Desire God?

Waiting is an honor

Having emotions that are sweetly delighting in Christ is right at the heart of worship, but most people do not feel that way all of the time. Can we still worship? In this session, John Piper explains how to honor God in our seasons of waiting.

Philippians 1:19-21 (ESV)

19for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance,20as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death.21For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

In this passage, Paul writes that his aim is to magnify Christ by the way he lives and dies. As you treasure Christ deeply, if/when you lose everything—in life or death— and gain only Christ, is that a win for you? How does your life show that Christ alone is better than anything, anyone, any time you have?

John talked about four different levels of worship.
  1. Overflowing
  2. Longing to overflow
  3. Seed of treasuring God
  4. No overflowing, no longing, no seed of treasuring = non-worship

When you are anything but overflowing in authentic worship, where do you turn? Are you practicing prayer and meditation? Are you reading God's Word or other inspirational works? Are you feeling remorse and regret? Are you crying out to God? Do you go to the world? Have you given up?

Psalm 40:1-3 (ESV)

My Help and My Deliverer

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

1I waited patiently for the Lord;

he inclined to me and heard my cry.

2He drew me up from the pit of destruction,

out of the miry bog,

and set my feet upon a rock,

making my steps secure.

3He put a new song in my mouth,

a song of praise to our God.

Many will see and fear,

and put their trust in the Lord.

John encouraged every Christ follower to realize that we're all over the map on the depth and intensity of our emotions. And God, in his mercy, can see our hearts and knows when he is treasured.
