1 - What is True Worship?

The key to praising Christ is prizing Him

John Piper summarizes the Christian life with this simple the phrase:  God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him. God created the universe so that it would display the worth of his glory. This gripping worship video from spoken-word post Amena Brown explores authentic praise as the natural response to knowing God truly.

Worship is what we were created for. In this course, John Piper answers critical questions pertaining to all of life as worship. For 33 years, John served as Pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Minneapolis. He is the author of more than 50 books, including Desiring God and When I Don't Desire God. In this first session, John defines the essences of true worship. The key to praising Christ is prizing him.

John 4:23 (ESV)

23But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.

John gave three points about true worship based on this verse.
  1. God is seeking worshipers.
  2. God needs to be worshiped in spirit.
  3. God needs to be known truly.

How does the statement, "God is seeking such people to worship him" strike you? Does it seem like megalomania, as John noted some people feel? What does your answer say about your view of God?

John 3:5-8 (ESV)

5Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.7Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘Youmust be born again.’8The windblows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

God wants to be worshiped by the power of the Holy Spirit authentically in our spirit, not mere outward movements of the body. Is your worship coming from your spirit and enabled by the Holy Spirit? When have you/are you simply "going through the motions"?

John told a story about money and trust to illustrate how God needs to be known truly to be worshiped authentically. How are you honoring God with your life? Is your spirit responding and treasuring true views of God? Do you have any false views of God? How can you strive to know Him more?

True worship shows God is the highest value, worthy of praise, and most admiration. The essence of worship is not the movement of lips, hands, knees—but the movement of our hearts towards him every day of our lives.
