7 - Joy of the Sower

The Harvest is Plentiful When the Sower Has Done Good Work

For the final session, Lance Shumake focuses our attention to Christ's words to the sowers and reapers of the harvest of salvation. Usually, when we read Jesus' farming analogy, we tend to think of the joy associated with the harvest, but Lance instructs us that the hard work of sowing seeds greatly benefits us in our evangelistic work for the Lord and our continued experience of His joy.

John 4:35-36 (ESV)

35Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.36Alreadythe one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.

Have you ever experienced disappointment at sowing seeds, wondering why you are not able to see harvest? Why do you think that many of us in the church do not count sowing the way we count conversions?

We should all rightly take joy in the harvest of new believers entering into the family of God. Along the way, however, we can continually take joy in sowing the seeds of the gospel message. After all, that is the only thing Jesus has called us to do. The Holy Spirit will work at changing the hearts of men, and we should be happy to be used in any part of God's wonderful plan.

Congratulations on completing this training! Our sincere hope is that you feel more confident and prepared for our mission trip. Spend some time with your team asking Him to bless your trip and your plans, and ask God to help us all to follow the Spirit's leading as we go out to serve in on our short-term mission trip.
