Crafting an Environment of Discipleship

A God Encountering Environment

At Netcast Church, in Boston, Matt Chewning and his staff value discipleship, like most churches, but do not follow as formal process as many do. They work to create an environment in which discipleship and evangelism are the natural outpouring of the life of faith. In this first video, he describes the environment for which Netcast Church strives and what he believes will come of members who fully encounter Jesus.

Read John 4:5–30. In your experience, have you seen people react to their salvation the way the Samaritan woman reacted to meeting Jesus? Describe how this person lived and spoke because of their encounter with the Lord.

Mission is the natural lifestyle response for someone who has met with God.

A Discipleship Journey Environment

When someone is ready to go on mission and share the gospel, this desire will be accompanied by growth in their relationship with Jesus. In this next video, Matt discusses the nature of the discipleship journey at Netcast Church.

Mark 1:16-18 (ESV)

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

16Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.17And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”18And immediately they left their nets and followed him.

Matt said that a discipleship class implies a completion of the process and should therefore be avoided. Do you agree with him? How would you address this potential problem?
