Gospel Penetrating Culture

Urban has Reached your Doorstep

Lecrae is a rapper and the founder of Reach Records. He and pastor D.A. Horton began ReachLife Ministries in Atlanta as a parachurch movement to bring the gospel to the urban context. At the 2013 SEND Conference, the two paired up to teach that urbanization is a pressing reality in our culture and share their strategies for reaching the unchurched in the hood.

Matthew 28:16-20 (ESV)

The Great Commission

16Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.17And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.18And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them inthe name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,20teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Even though some of the disciples doubted, Jesus assured them of his authority and sent them to engage with all nations and cultures.

D.A. and Lecrae also suggested the church be the backbone behind all other missional efforts. Does your church have a good plan in place to disciple all those brought in through parachurch work or individual evangelical efforts? What would be an ideal way for your church to begin doing this?

Jesus gladly accepted those who the other religious leaders despised. He never treated people like projects, but loved and engaged individuals.

Personally, what is your current level of engagement with people in your city who would normally never feel welcome in the church?

If the church is going to be serious about living out the Great Commission in its own neighborhood, we must work together to engage communities to bring cultural rehabilitation.
