The Fight for Freedom

Gary Haugen founded International Justice Mission with the objective of securing justice for victims of slavery and other forms of violent oppression. In this message, he shares his own story of God drawing him into the fight for justice and the wonderful ways God is already redeeming some of those in bondage. He challenges the Passion Conference, and the whole church in the first world, to take a stand for the oppressed in the name of Jesus.

In John13:34–35, Jesus told the disciples that love will be the mark of true followers of Jesus. Gary saw a lack of Christian love in his own life when he was confronted with the horrors of the Rwandan genocide. This prompted him to change and take Christ's command seriously.

Do you believe that people are able to tell that you are a Christian only by watching the way that you love others? In what facet of your life is your love no different from the world's?

Gary said that Jesus has five things he wants to give us so that we can become instruments of justice. Consider these as you work through this next set of questions.

1. Extravagant Compassion - Where are you fearful to open up your heart? Where might Jesus be asking you to take risks with your heart so that you can hurt for people the way that he does?

2. Moral Clarity - From where do you find moral clarity? When have you let culture dictate your morals rather than Scripture?

3. Sacrificial Courage - What moral stances have you taken in the past? Where might Jesus be asking you to take a moral stand right now?

Gary said, "God does not give his people a ministry for which He does not give them the power to do it." Take this training as a charge to find the place that God has given you in the fight against injustice.
