Gospel on the Ground

How does the gospel story fit into God's grand story of all creation? How does it fit in your story? In this training post, Trevor Joy, Spiritual Formation Pastor at The Village Church in Flower Mound, Texas, discusses the impact the gospel has on the world, on your every day life, and on your community group.

It's impossible to overstate the importance of the gospel. It impacts everything we are and all that we do. Without Jesus' work on the cross, we are all dead, eternally separated from God. But through Jesus, we can have abundant life. That's a message we should joyfully proclaim with others. Yet how often do we really tell others the good news? Is your faith contagious?

God's method for spreading the gospel is through faithful disciples of Jesus…through people like you and me. Listen as Trevor explains the importance of us being messengers of the gospel.

I love Trevor's image of the gospel being like a flowing body of water, not a stagnate, lifeless lake. Take a moment to reflect on your life. Has the good news of Jesus impacted you so much that you just can't help but share it with others? Why or why not?

Take a moment to consider what it means that through Jesus we have been adopted into God's family. How should that impact the way you treat others in your life group, your family, your place of employment, and your community?

Trevor noted that community isn't the goal, it's a vehicle God uses for the gospel to flow. Evaluate your community. Are you letting the gospel flow through you, or is your group a dam? What needs to change?

In this next video, Trevor talks about what it means to have a gospel-centered community.

Trevor made a very insightful comment. He said, "my life is a canvas." What picture is God painting on you? How do you reflect God?

Trevor also noted that the mission for your community should stem from the gospel and the "one another" accounts in Scripture. He gave us three priorities that they hold for their small groups as The Village:

  • Genuine and authentic community
  • Safe
  • Intentional

How do you think those three priorities help their groups remain gospel-centered?

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
