The Gospel Focus of Charles Spurgeon

Page 1

In this 38 minute session from the 2012 Ligonier Conference, Steven Lawson, Senior Pastor of Christ Fellowship Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama and author of "The Gospel Focus of Charles Spurgeon", gives a robust defense of Calvinism and its presence in Spurgeon's ministry. With a heavy use of Spurgeon's own sermons and writing, Lawson argues that a preacher must include the doctrine of election from the pulpit if he is to preach the full gospel.

As you watch this session, take notes and write down thoughts about how this session can impact your role.

Dr. Lawson teaches that Charles Spurgeon is unmatched in the history of preachers. One of the primary things that set him apart from all others was his uncanny reliance and focus on the gospel.

Does your church have a constant and pronounced focus on the gospel of Jesus?

When Charles Spurgeon was asked how he reconciles divine sovereignty and human responsibility, he said, "I never have to reconcile friends. Divine sovereignty and human responsibility have never had a falling out with each other. I do not need to reconcile what God has joined together. Where these truths meet I do not know, nor do I want to know. They do not puzzle me, since I have given my mind to believing them both."

Do you have trouble embracing divine mystery? What mysteries of the gospel are the hardest to wrap your mind around? What about the Trinity, the dual nature of Christ, the author of the Scriptures, or election and the freedom of man?

Let all of us who are redeemed in Christ live the gospel fully and boldly, so that we might see some come to trust him. In Spurgeon's words, may "not one go there unwarned and unprayed for."
