Levels of Social Impact

In this 5 minute session from Leadership Network's 2012 The Nines Conference, Dave Ferguson, Lead Pastor at Community Christian Church in Naperville, Illinois, gives three levels of response that the church should offer to social problems. Dave insists that whether the church focuses on disciple making or community troubles, both will be addressed.

Dave's church meets the needs of its community at three different levels.
  1. Charitable - give them a fish
  2. Empowering - teach them to fish
  3. Development - help them build a fishing pond

Charitable - How does your church meet immediate community needs when crisis situations arise? If you are not doing this, how can you make changes to start?

Empowering - How does your church help people learn skills that can set them free to do ministry and to work on their own? If you are not doing this, how can you make changes to start?

Development - What does your church do to give tools to the community at large so that it can grow and make positive impact? If you are not doing this, how can you make changes to start?

As the church, it is our job to become and make disciples. It is also our job, as disciples, to make a positive impact in Jesus' name on the world around us.
