Losing My Religion

2012 Ligonier Conference

In this 45 minute session from the 2012 Ligonier Conference, Sinclair Ferguson, the Senior Minister at First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC and professor at Westminster Seminary, speaks to the tendency of some in the church to become content with the first things of the faith without exploring the depths of Scripture. He challenges believers to dig into the Scriptures for themselves and to dig into good Christian books.

As you watch this session, take notes and write down thoughts about how this session can impact your role.

Read Psalm 119: 97–100. This passage is a great picture of the attitude that we should all have toward Scripture. Unfortunately, many of us develop that attitude that we have arrived at spiritual maturity and do not take study of God's Word seriously.

We should pursue a deeper knowledge of God for three reasons.
  1. We have been regenerated so that we will know God.
  2. Jesus specifically taught that we should know the things of God.
  3. Knowing God has life transforming power.

Dr. Ferguson gave us three ways to facilitate our growth in knowledge of God.
  1. Place your life under a living ministry of the Word.
  2. Dig deeply into God's Word on your own.
  3. Read the greatest Christian books.
