Have You Lost Your Mind?

2012 Ligonier Conference

In this 44 minute session from the 2012 Ligonier Conference, Dr. R.C. Sproul, the chairman of Ligonier Ministries and voice of the Renewing Your Mind radio broadcast, teaches us about the role of the mind in the life of the believer. This instructive message covers some major developments in the history of the philosophy of the intellect, and how these ideas either clash or harmonize with Scripture.

As you watch this session, take notes and write down thoughts about how this session can impact your role.

Dr. Sproul says that we are living in the most anti-intellectual climate in the history of the Christian church. He explained that there has never been such apathy and criticism about the role of reason in the Christian life. Sadly, much of this criticism even comes from the church itself. As believers, we must appreciate the gift of intellect that God has given us and use it for His glory.

How have you witnessed or experienced antagonism toward the intellect from members of the church?

Some humanist philosophers believe that we have no freedom to think or act, but that we are merely the result of animal impulses. How can you use Acts 17:26–28 as an argument against this type of thinking?

Descartes' followers, the Occasionalists, argued that God is the primary and active cause behind all actions in this world, and we are only secondarily responsible. They made this claim because some worldly philosophers wanted to remove the role of God's rule in our lives and claim that we act outside of God's providence.

What is your response to this idea? How do we account for sin if God controls everything?

At the end of his talk, Dr. Sproul said that changing your heart begins with renewing your mind, and this is the essence of sanctification. Consider the state of your heart today, and write a few areas of your mind that are in need of transformation.

Spend some time in prayer thanking God for the gift of your mind. Ask Him to help you use your intellect in a way that honors Him and to direct you toward renewing your mind so that you become more like Christ.
