Capturing the Picture of the Bride of Christ in Your Family

2011 D6 Conference

In this 46 minute session from the 2011 D6 conference, Dannah Gresh, speaker and author of "And the Bride Wore White" and "Lies Young Women Believe", talks to Christian parents about reflecting the Bride of Christ in their individual families. She shares frightening statistics about the lies and schemes of this world, which attempts to grow up our children long before they are ready. By the end, she offers great encouragement for fighting these schemes with a biblical attitude toward marriage and family.

As you listen to Dannah, consider how her lessons and advice fit into your family.

Dannah said that the reason God made us sexual beings was to make Him more deeply knowable. The Bible describes sex according to God's plan as knowing someone in a deep and intimate way.

Is guilt from the sins of your past hindering your ability to love your spouse now? How can understanding these Hebrew terms (yada-to know vs. sakab-to lie with) help you to accept God's forgiveness and embrace the richness of the gift of sex?

The world is fighting to sexualize our little girls and make our little boys lazy and unconcerned with others. Godly parents made aware of these things are the best answer for directing our children towards lives pleasing to the Lord.

Dannah told us that little girls are encouraged by sexualized dolls to play "seduce the boy" instead of learning to value nurturing and helping others. The average 12 year old used to watch Care Bears but today they tune into Vampire Diaries. If you have daughters, how have you seen attacks like this on her heart? What do you do fight for her purity?

Dannah said that most little boys play 35 hours a week of video games and they are exposed to pornography by age 11. The term "adultescent" has been developed because males in their early twenties are showing no desire to become men. If you have sons, how have you seen these kind of attacks on his strength? What do you do to fight for his manhood?

Dannah left us with a two part challenge for directing our children to a life that will exemplify the gospel in their future marriages.

  1. Let them see your passion for marriage so they have a desire for marriage when they get older.
  2. Protect the desire for family by keeping the little in your girl and the good in your son.

How do you and your spouse show great love for each other in front of your kids? Is there a change you need to make in this area?

Dannah suggested that we pray the Lord's Prayer over our own families. The following text boxes have the prayer divided by major clauses. In each blank, write how that part of the Lord's Prayer will specifically apply to you and your family.

Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name.
