Fighting the Culture War with God's View of Marriage featuring Voddie Baucham

Page 1

In this 44 minute session from the 2011 D6 conference, Voddie Baucham, author of Family Shepherds and senior pastor of Grace Family Baptist Church in Spring, TX, defines America's culture war as an attack on God's plan for the family and His church. Voddie challenges us to embrace the gospel as our only sufficient means of fighting the work of evil in this world.

As you watch this session, take notes and write down your thoughts about his words and your role in the current culture war.

Most people use the term culture war to reference a political strategy or a wish for a return to a golden age. Voddie tells us that both of these miss the true beginning of this conflict.

He challenges Christians who focus their attention on symptoms of evil. Our battle is rooted in Genesis 3, rather than any current political or social disagreement. God created a perfect plan at Creation and the Fall created separation between God and man. Christians engage the culture war by looking to God's plan for humanity.

Voddie's cartoon showed a castle called Humanism at war with a castle called Christianity. He showed that many Christians aim at symptoms of evil instead of the core problem—worldly philosophy as substitution for the gospel. Where do you see examples of misfires of our time and resources in your own church?

Voddie argues that feminism, and other alternative moralities, are anti-biblical and anti-Christian. In part, these ideologies believe that patriarchy (homes led by men) are antiquated and immoral. He cites one UN official who believes that high divorce rates and out of wedlock births are signs of progress and a triumph of human rights against patriarchy. How would you form a biblical answer to this assertion?

The curse that resulted from the Fall caused enmity between Satan and men, who are made in God's image. Voddie listed some of the consequences of the curse as abortion, murder, abandonment, fatherlessness, child starvation, homosexuality, and intentional childlessness. How should the church address these symptoms so that we do not miss the heart of the culture war?

God's answer to the culture war is Jesus. Just as Joseph represented his brothers and David represented Israel, Jesus stood in place for all of us on the Cross. Take some time now to thank Jesus for being the answer to our problem with sin. Now consider how Voddie's message will affect your approach to sharing the gospel from this point forward.
