You are a Logo for God

2012 Echo Conference

In this 50 minute session from the 2012 Echo conference, Todd Wagner explains how God chooses to use us to represent Himself to a watching world. Todd Wagner is the Senior Pastor of Watermark Community Church in Dallas, Texas.

As you watch this session, take notes and write down thoughts about how this session can impact your ministry.

Read Romans 3:23. Todd said that many people have the perspective from that verse that God is "ticked" at our imperfection, but explained that it means we are "dinged up" when we live apart from what God intended or created. That could mean we compare ourselves to what others can do and feel better or worse about ourselves. How do you view yourself? Is that a true vision of how God sees you? Who are you trying to impress? Why? What feelings does that bring out in you?

Read Psalm 139:14. Todd gave the analogy of himself, as a father, viewing his own kids who are not stars of any show or sport. Think of how your heavenly father "delights" in you! Take some time to really soak that thought into the perception you have about yourself. Does that ring true to you? Do you really know that in your heart? Why or why not?

When talking about how we are created for glory, Todd referred to 1 Kings 3, where Solomon asked for wisdom instead of glory, and Mark 10, where James and John asked Jesus to do for them whatever they asked. Read Mark 3:35–44. God's way to glory is not our natural way to glory.

As you think about how you have tried to attain glory, is it God's way or your way? Is there something disconnecting your from God's way? What do you need to change?

Read Col. 1:25–29 and Eph. 2:10. Todd talked about how Jerry West's profile, a real basketball player, is the logo for the NBA and talked about how we were given the "logos" i.e. Jesus as the representation of God on earth. We are chosen to be God's "logo," representing Christ to the world. God has entrusted us with how the world will view him. What's your logo like? Where are you dinging it up?

Read Proverbs 27:17. Creative work lends itself to isolation. Todd encouraged teamwork and editing in a good friend who loves you dearly with truth and grace. Are you going your own way? Who are you engaged with to develop yourself into a better logo—more Christlike?

When people behold God's glory in us, they will run to Him. Your art must honor God and invite others to participate in a relationship with Christ. Are you authentic in your brokenness? How is it showing in your life and art?

The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
