Business by the Bible

2012 Work as Worship Conference

In this 30 minute session from the 2012 Work as Worship Conference, Steve Green talks about how they turned Hobby Lobby over to God and operate as stewards. Steve is the President of Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., the largest privately-owned arts and crafts retailer in the world. Steve devotes half his time to The Green Collection, one of the world's newest and largest private collections of rare biblical texts and artifacts.

Take a look at this video as Steve and his father, David Green, CEO and Founder, share how they use their God-given talents and resources to enlarge God's kingdom and serve Hobby Lobby's employees and customers.

David Green discovered that he didn't have to be a minister to be in full time ministry. Look at the way the Green family has worshipped through their work as they steward what God has given them. Ultimately all of our “work as worship” is for the purpose of glorifying God and sharing Jesus in word and deed with those that don’t know him.

As you watch this session, take notes and write down thoughts about how this session can impact the way you view and conduct your work.

Steve gave the two parts to Hobby Lobby's statement of purpose:
  1. Honoring the Lord in all that we do by operating the company in a manner consistent to biblical principles.
  2. We believe it's by God's grace and provision that Hobby Lobby has endured. He has been faithful in the past and we trust him for our future.

As an entrepreneur or employee, are you honoring the Lord by operating your business and/or conducting yourself in a manner consistent to biblical principles? What does that look like?

Steve said that the success of Hobby Lobby was not a revolutionary breakthrough, but constant, steady, hard work that God has blessed, and the understanding that God is working through them. Have you turned your business and/or work life over to God to let him work through you? What is God doing through you?

Out of some frustration and a conviction to honor God in their business, the Green family changed some policies: taking ads out about the meaning of holidays, not working on Sundays, adding ministries for families, and other policies. Are there any of those that inspired you to action or change?

Steve explained the reasons for starting The Green Collection of Bible texts and artifacts came out of a desire for people to know the history and impact of the Bible and what it says. He said, "God has given us the precious gift of his Word. It gives us the guidebook on how to live in all areas of our life." Are you using the Bible as a guidebook in all areas of your life? How does that inspire you?

Steve explained the faith legacy of his grandmother, Marie, who lived a quiet, unassuming, humble life and passed along her love of God that has continued through the generations. How are you passing along your faith? What will your family remember about you?

God is not impressed with the size of what we do; God is looking for a life of faithfulness. May we choose to make the tough decisions to let God be God of our lives in all things.
