Bringing Meaning to Your Work

2012 Work as Worship Conference

In this 25 minute session from the 2012 Work as Worship Conference, Bonnie Wurzbacher, Senior Vice President of The Coca-Cola Company, talks about the important role of business in God's Kingdom and the need for more people who understand and desire to serve God in their work.

Why do we work? Take a look at this video that asks us to reflect on the purpose of our work.

How do we bring glory to God, who has placed us in the business world? Do you view your work as an opportunity to worship the God who made you?

As you watch this session, take notes and write down thoughts about how this session can impact the way you view and conduct your work.

Bonnie talked about three important truths she learned about work.
  1. Our work can be a sacred calling.
  2. Our work is our primary means of engaging with God in the world.
  3. There is no such thing as meaningful work, we must bring meaning to it.

What do you think of that list? Do you view work as a way you worship God, or do you worship work? How are you engaging with God in your work life? How are you bringing meaning to your work?

Bonnie talked about how to identity your calling in business.
  • God-given gifts and abilities to do the job. "Can do"
  • Enjoyment in doing it. "Want to"
  • Learning to follow God's leading. "Led to"

Do you feel that God has placed you where you are in the marketplace? Do you have the "can do, want to, led to" in your current position? Why or why not? Is there anything that needs to change?

Bonnie talked about the Greek model of life that accounts for the divide between the sacred and secular. And the Judeo-Christian model that explains our work is the way we engage with God in the world, to restore his original purposes for it. What philosophy to you model? How?

Bonnie said, "People who are enabled and encouraged to use their gifts and entrepreneurial skills not only pull their families out of poverty, but they are filled with dignity and hope." How does your work contribute to the help and hope of your family and others? What can God do through you in your work to make a difference in the world?

Take a moment to redefine how you view your work. Think about how you serve God in the product and process of your work. Bonnie gave the parable of the stone masons. Which answer would you give?

Encourage your church to equip you and your congregation to be scattered into the secular world, demonstrating God's love and grace and character to those with whom you work
