When Tragedy Strikes

In this 6-minute session from Leadership Network's 2012 The Nines Conference, Ed Stetzer, the Billy Graham Chair of Church, Mission, and Evangelism at Wheaton College and Executive Director of the Billy Graham Center for Evangelism, talks about showing  and sharing the love of Christ in the midst of tragedy.

As you watch this session, take notes and write down thoughts about how this session can impact your role.

Ed began with an interesting comment about his former church; that they had a bad reputation in the community. One way they decided to try and change that was by bringing Christ's love to their community and serving them. What's the reputation of your church in your community? Are you waiting for a disaster to strike in order to get mobilized to serve those in your community? What can you do right now?

When disaster does strike, Ed recommended asking three important questions:
  1. Why?
  2. What now?
  3. Who?

How do you feel about Ed's suggestion that it's okay to tell people that you don't know why something terrible happened? Do you agree or disagree? How do you answer that question when people ask you?

Does it really comfort those experiencing tragedy to tell them that their current suffering is incomparable to future glory? Why or why not? What if the person suffering is not a believer in Jesus?

How has God used your church to display His work in the midst of tragedy in the past? What things can you do to be prepared for the "next" disaster? Is that even possible? Why or why not?

Ed said that in the midst of tragedy, we need to show and share the love of Christ. What does that really look like? You can show the love of Christ by taking care of their physical needs. How do you share the love of Christ? Is that only through evangelism?
