Our world values being unique. So much so, that students end up looking the same as they try to be different. But we want students to know they aren't their clothes, their relationships or their accomplishments.

In Christ they are much more!

The Identity series has four thought-provoking sessions where students share their struggles with how they look, what they have, what they have done or not done. Check out an example of one of the real-life stories that will be featured in Identity. Perla talks about how she felt defined after being labeled "that girl who got pregnant."

As a leader of students, you have a lot of influence in how your students feel about themselves and how they treat others. Do you know any students like Perla who feel they cannot overcome a label? Do you know any students who act or dress to fit in with a crowd? Are there students are on the fringe who you could reach out to as you start this Bible study?

In each of the four sessions, Eric Mason will compare the message the world constantly tells teens about their identity with the truths found in Scripture.

Eric is the Lead Pastor of Epiphany Fellowship in Philadelphia. Listen as he gives us guidance and inspiration on how to teach students about their identity in Christ before you lead the Bible study.

Eric was in youth ministry for a number of years so he really knows what we are going through with our students! (And he knows we can be a bit weird.)

Eric mentioned a common tendency that everyone has … youth leaders and students … to gravitate towards the more popular people and advised that we make sure we are building a great culture of acceptance.

Did anything Eric say speak to you about your own life as how you are treating or relating to the students in your group? (If it's too private to write down, please take some time to process and pray about it.)

At the beginning of each session, your students will experience dramatic or sometimes funny illustrations to ease into the topic. In this illustration, Brett uses spoken words to talk about the pain of looking different and not fitting in.

Do the students in your group pick their friends by who they like and who's popular or are they intentionally engaging people that other students may not relate to? How do you address that attitude?

Eric referenced 2 Peter 1:5-9. Take a moment to read that passage. Is there a way that you can use your own life and this passage to help your students become more like Christ?

To help you teach, you will use the downloadable Leader's Guide and group handouts available online to dig deep into powerful teaching from the video. Take some time in advance to consider the Bible study questions and come up with personal examples to encourage discussion with your students.

As you prepare to lead this Bible study, are there any ways I can pray for you or help you facilitate?
