The Power of Marketplace Christianity

2017 Orlando Work as Worship Conference

Ministry isn’t restricted to an elite few. All believers have been called by God to share the gospel and make disciples. For those of us who spend most of our lives at work, God has called us to carry out His mission from our office desks, board rooms, and lunch tables. In this 29-minute session, pastor Larry Osborne uses biblical examples to show how Christians should see their work as a calling from God.

Dr. Larry Osborne has served as one of the senior pastors at North Coast Church in Vista, California since 1980. His books include: Innovation's Dirty Little Secret, Sticky Teams, Sticky Church, Accidental Pharisees, Mission Creep, 10 Dumb Things Smart Christians Believe, Thriving in Babylon, Spirituality for The Rest of Us, and The Unity Factor.

Larry debunked the myth that says only certain Christians are called to ministry. In reality, every believer is on mission for God no matter what they do from nine to five. All of us have relationship with God, union with the Spirit, and the example of Christ. Our work is one of the places we put our faith into action.

How would you describe your work right now? Would you say it’s your ministry? Why or why not?

How does knowing you’re called to minister impact you? Does it encourage you? Frighten you? Excite you? Why do you think that is?

Larry said we are all called to the front lines as Christians. But the front lines aren’t the pulpit or church building; they’re the places we go everyday—our work, home, school, and community.

What about your work makes you feel like you are on the front lines?

Larry named several examples from Scripture of people who honored God in the marketplace. How do you relate to biblical characters—like Daniel, Joseph, and Esther—who used their position to the glory of God?

Larry said when we go to work everyday, we are on assignment from God. How does the idea that you’re on assignment from God breathe new purpose into your work?

Jesus picked ordinary workers as His partners in ministry. The disciples ranged from fishermen to accountants to tax collectors. No job is too small in the kingdom of God—He uses our jobs for His glory. In what ways do you see your job as impacting the kingdom of God?

Larry closed by challenging us to shine our light and ask Jesus what He wants us to do each day. What do you think Jesus is asking you to do for Him at work this week? What steps could you take toward obeying His call on your life?

As a minister of the kingdom of God, you are called to share the gospel and make disciples. When you walk into work on Monday morning, you step to the front lines. Pray about your attitude toward work this week. Ask God to show you how your work is a ministry to the people around you. Every morning, ask Him what He wants you to do that day for His glory.
