God's Vision For Your Life and Your Church

2017 RightNow Conference Orlando

God’s vision for His Church is powerful and certain. Though culture changes as the years and generations march on, the gospel never changes. Heralding truth from the fringes, rather than the power centers, Jesus’s Church will prevail, because He has already won the victory. In this 30-minute session from the 2017 RightNow Conference in Orlando, Joby Martin, Lead Pastor at The Church of Eleven22, encourages believers with the reminder that we do not fight for victory, we fight from victory.

Joby is the Lead Pastor of The Church of Eleven22 in Jacksonville, Florida. Prior to his current role, he served as Student Pastor at Jacksonville's Beach Church for four years, which went on to help launch Eleven22. In addition to his pastoral duties, Joby is part of the Exponential church planting conferences, serves alongside Larry Osbourne at Sticky Team conferences, is a speaker at the Velocity church planting conference, and is active in the Acts 29 Network.

As you watch this session, take notes and write down thoughts about how this session can impact your ministry.

Because of Christ’s victory over sin and death on the cross, we have already won! Take heart.

Joby referenced the fact that our culture is changing. In what ways have you noticed the culture shift in the last 30 years? 10 years? 2 years?

Even though the culture changes, the gospel does not. It remains true and vital in every culture and every generation.

How does the gospel message speak to the people at this point in history? In what ways is the gospel vital in the current culture?

The gospel never flourished in power centers. It always flourished from the fringes. How does this encourage you?

Have you been putting your hope in God’s Kingdom coming through a power center, like the government or your nation? How does the reality of a Kingdom that comes from the fringes shift your perspective on life? Ministry? Salvation?

Joby shared the convicting truth that when the Church is built upon the gospel, it will prevail. But when it’s built on a strategy, it’s just a pyramid scheme. When built on marketing, it’s a news feed. When built on a tradition, it’s a museum. When built upon numbers, you become merely a politician.

Reflect upon your own church. Upon what are you building?

Matthew 16:13-23 (ESV)

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”14And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”15He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”16Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”17And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.18And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.22And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.”23But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

Peter moves from being called the Rock of the Church to being called the devil in just a few short verses. If Peter, an Apostle and one of Jesus’s closest followers, is capable of this, certainly we are too.

Like Peter, we are tempted to replace the results of the gospel for the gospel itself. Are you mistaking implications of the gospel for the gospel itself? In what ways does this play out?

Pastors and ministers are often called, not to the middle of the flock to be with the well-groomed sheep, but to the fringes, where the sheep bite and run away. Shepherding souls is difficult. Yet when the Church is built upon the gospel, it is not our activity that determines success, but Christ’s activity on the cross that determines success.

What are the difficult places of serving in your church? How are you ministering to those on the fringes of the flock?

The deciding blow has already been dealt to the enemy. The Church will prevail, because in Christ, we are on the winning side. We do not fight for victory, but from victory.
