The Responsibility of Leadership

Two Responsibilities

Leadership comes with its own set of unique challenges. When you lead a company or team, you bear the weight of responsibility. Bryant Ambelang, President and CEO of NatureSweet, shares his responsibilities as leader of the company as well as some of the practices he has in place in order to respect his employees.

Bryant is the President and CEO of NatureSweet, Ltd., the largest greenhouse producer of tomatoes in North America. Currently, NatureSweet operates seven facilities—six in Mexico and one in the U.S.—and pursues its mission of "unleashing the power of people" through a vertically integrated production model that offers full-time direct employment to over 8,000 associates.

Bryant spoke about two of the responsibilities of leadership: listening to employees and influencing the board. In order to unleash the power of the people, you must know what they are thinking. You also need to lead the company with excellence and have a board that is committed to your vision.

Bryant said when he listens to an employee, they agree on the topic and he listens without bias. He can the follow up with a “yes,” “no,” or a clarifying question. What stands out to you about Bryant’s approach? Why?

Unleashing the power of people begins with you. As the leader, you have the responsibility to care for your employees and help them meet their full potential.
