How to Talk About Money With Your Group featuring Dave Ramsey

Dave Ramsey is a Christian money management expert and best-selling author who specializes in helping educate people on the principles of Biblical finance.

In this session we will dive into the topic of how you can help lead people towards a healthy, biblical perspective about money. Let's face it, we are inundated with messages telling us to buy this or try that. This short video below highlights how wide-spread and intoxicating consumerism has become in our day.

I have to admit that I am conflicted by this video because it has too much truth to it. If I'm being honest then I have to say that I can act as if I'm the king way too often. Do you relate to this video? In what ways has the message of consumerism affected you?

Watch this story below about Dave and Sharon Ramsey as they used their real-life struggle with money to drive them to a biblical view of finance. The Ramseys know first-hand what financial peace means in their own life – living a true rags-to-riches-to-rags-to-riches story.

Dave and Sharon described the despair and embarrassment they felt when they went bankrupt. Maybe you've gone through bankruptcy, or even just a position where you couldn't pay a bill. It's a sick feeling. Have you ever been there? Describe the situation.

I think when you combine that sick feeling of not having money with the embarrassment it brings, it can be a toxic situation. Honestly, I think that's why we are so scared to talk about it at church. We don't want to make anyone uncomfortable. But here's the deal... we all need help in understanding that our money is God's business.

Dave said that to completely ignore the financial teaching of the Bible is to ignore a significant section of the Bible. It would be an incomplete picture of your spiritual walk. He also said that discussing issues of money will take you places in your spiritual walk that nothing else will. Have you ever considered the idea that money is an indicator of your spiritual life--how you handle it, mishandle it, earn it, spend it, save it, give it? How are these areas of finances an indicator of our spiritual walk?

Dave gives us two safe areas for discussing money in your group.
  1. Talk about yourself and explain the smart things and the dumb things you have done.
  2. Talk about the concepts of money covered in the Bible (stay out of debt, have a budget, live on less than we make, don't co-sign, etc…)
I want to encourage you to find a time in your group to talk about some wins and losses in your own life regarding finances and then tie those to lessons you have learned from the Bible. I believe this will be a great way to ignite financial discussions in your group and ultimately lead yourself and your group into a deeper spiritual walk.
