From the Garden to the Savior

The Hope of Christ in Our Difficulties

Since Adam and Eve's rebellion in the Garden of Eden, struggle has been a common experience for all humanity. No man or woman has ever lived a life free from trial. While no one remains unstained by the effects of suffering, there is a universal hope available to all. In this post created in cooperation with the Association of Biblical Counselors, Robert Cheong, Pastor of Care at Sojourn Community Church in Louisville, Kentucky describes our familiar struggles and demonstrates how Jesus is our hope in their midst.

Robert focused on five struggles common to everyone:
  1. Fantasy
  2. Shame/Guilt
  3. Fear
  4. Anger
  5. Sorrow
Grouped together, they have touched every life and serve as familiar points of contact to which we can all relate to one another experientially.

Which of the struggles Robert described can you relate to best? How does it impact your day to day life? In what ways does it hinder you in service to God?

Romans 5:17 (ESV)

17For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

Sin entered into the world in the Garden of Eden through the disobedience of Adam and Eve, bringing with it a variety of struggles common to us all. However, God has not left us without hope. Robert explained how Jesus' death and resurrection reconciles us to God and frees us from the burden of our struggles. When we set our eyes on Him, we fix our hope on a Savior who exists beyond our circumstances.

How have you experienced the hope of Jesus in your struggles? How has He demonstrated His faithfulness to you? In what ways has His past faithfulness changed your approach to difficulties today?

In what ways do you need to grow in your trust that Jesus is sufficient hope for your struggles? What steps will you take towards maturity in the days ahead? Who can you ask to walk with you in that process?

When we trust in Jesus Christ for salvation, we place our hope in Savior who has conquered the circumstances we face. Though struggle remains, He is with us and will not leave us in the midst of them. Ask God to deepen your trust in Jesus' caring embrace. Spend time reflecting on the promises of Scripture and allow God to lead into a more mature walk with Him.
