Assess and Develop Potential Missionaries

Know What You’re Looking For

Your church decides to send a member overseas for mission work, but what's the first step? Missionaries need a firm foundation in order to thrive on the mission field. In this session from Missio Nexus' On Mission webinar, Nathan Garth, Pastor of International Missions at Sojourn Community Church in Louisville, Kentucky, talks about what to look for in missionary candidates, how to assess them for the field, and what steps to take in order to prepare them for mission work.

Nathan listed four components of a holistic assessment of potential missionaries:
  • Develop a formal process.
  • Let relationship be the driving factor.
  • Depend on the Holy Spirit.
  • Know that there's always a risk.

How is your church involved in mission work? Have you sent missionaries before? If so, how did your church decide to send missionaries and how do you support them?

Do you have a process to assess missionary candidates? If so, what does it look like? How does it compare to Nathan's strategy? If not, what sort of process would you like to see in your church?

Nathan used a diagram to show eleven essential character traits of missionaries. You can find a version of that diagram in the link below. What characteristics, if any, surprised you? Why? Which ones stood out to you and why? How does your church encourage its member in each of these categories?

Nathan said development means the church holistically prepares a person for the mission field. Would you say your church equips people in knowledge, character, and skills? Why or why not? Where do you see room for improvement?

How could you promote a healthy assessment and development system for future missionaries in your local church this week?

Large or small, any church can be involved in sending and supporting missionaries. Evaluate any current procedures your church has in place for preparing missionaries for the field. Consider implementing the principles from Nathan's talk. If you don't have any processes in place, start a dialogue with your church leaders this week.
