3 - Persecution

Faithful Witnesses

This course began by examining how the church should interact with culture. We should, as transformed people, become agents of transformation. Secondly, Don, Tim, and John explained the necessity for believers to be on Jesus’s side of history, even when the world says otherwise. In this final section, Don, Tim and John talk about persecution.

Persecution has followed the Christian faith from the beginning—the apostles died for their faith and our brothers and sisters are still martyred today. Tim made a point to say that the persecution—or oppression—we experience in the Untied States is only a small fraction of the persecution suffered by the church worldwide. We need to maintain a healthy perspective of persecution.

What stories have you heard about the persecuted church world wide? In what ways could you encourage and pray for your brothers and sisters enduring oppression for their faith?

Remaining faithful to God through persecution involves humility, endurance, and a loving community. John said the world will see Jesus through our love for one another. Have you experienced this kind of community before? If so, what was it like? How did you grow in your faith? What impact did your community make in the lives on nonbelievers? If not, what might it look like in your church to be a community of love and devotion, even in the midst of difficulty?
