Antidote to Arrogance

Pursue Humility

Enthusiasm is a natural part of the Christian life. Christ's redemptive work creates a deep sense of excitement among those who come to experience His saving grace. But if we're not careful, it can devolve into sentiments of arrogance if left unchecked. What should Christians do to remain on guard against pride? Greg Dutcher sits down with Mark Mellinger to share some of the lessons he learned as an arrogant believer in the early years of his faith.

Mark Mellinger is the Indiana Public Affairs Director for Bott Radio Network and talk show host for 1090 Today, a radio program that showcases local ministries and encourages Christian living. Greg Dutcher is the Lead Pastor of Christ Fellowship Church in Fallston, Maryland and the author of three books: Killing Calvinism, You Are the Treasure That I Seek, and Living Free in Enemy Territory.

How have you dealt with arrogance in your walk with Christ? What were some of the motivating causes? How has God matured your faith since then?

Greg warned against the danger of "celebritizing" certain leaders we look up to (pastors, authors, speakers, etc.). At the end of the day, doing so is a form of worship, despite our best intentions. Have you observed what Greg described in your own life or the church? If so, what could you do to confront any misplaced worship in your heart? If not, what have you done to prevent yourself from idolizing prominent teachers?

Today, we have a wealth of resources at our disposal. Greg said that the way we use them effectively without idolizing them is to develop a sense for their effectiveness in more fully enamoring us with Christ. What are some of the resources you turn to for spiritual development? How do they deepen your love for God? Do people see in you a greater love for Him as a result of these resources? If not, what needs to change?

As we mature in Christ through the resources and leaders He has provided us, it should lead us to engage with unbelievers. In what ways are you engaging those who are unchurched? Who has God placed in your life that needs to hear the gospel? What could you do to be more intentional about ministering to them?

To have a lasting ministerial impact with our lives, we must be marked by humility as opposed to arrogance. When we understand the truth about our salvation in Christ, it becomes impossible to look at others as though they are beneath us. Ask God to reveal to you any areas in your life where you are prone to arrogance and be bold in repenting of them. Turn you eyes to Christ and allow Him to lead you in humility.
