Should Christians Try to Legislate Their Morality?

Rights, Laws, and Morals

Many Christians fight for laws on abortion or homosexuality because of their biblical morals. Should Christian morality enter into the laws of our country? Christians leaders Kevin DeYoung, Collin Hansen, and Trevin Wax sit down to talk about biblical morality. They ask and answer key questions about morality and how Christian morals factor into legislation.

Kevin DeYoung is Senior Pastor at University Reformed Church in East Lansing, Michigan. Collin Hansen serves as editorial director for The Gospel Coalition and is the author of several books. Trevin Wax is managing editor of The Gospel Project, a gospel-centered small group curriculum for all ages, published by LifeWay Christian Resources.

Trevin said all legislation is based on morality. The question is, "Whose morality should govern our country’s laws?" Kevin used the illustration of gossip to show not all moral problems should turn into laws. But Christians should stand their ground on specific issues because the law should protect our God-given rights.

What examples come to mind of moral issues that don’t make sense to create into laws? What moral problems should there be legislation about? Why?

As Christians, apathy isn’t an option. We should live moral, obedient lives out of love for God. If you have the means to get involved in legislation, take advantage of your position. Vote intelligently, with biblical morals in mind.
