Q12: What Does God Require in the Ninth and Tenth Commandments?

New City Catechism: Question 12

Christians practice catechesis to instruct believers on the foundational truths of the Christian faith. In a question and answer format, this form of discipleship teaches the Apostle’s Creed, the Ten Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer, along with the basics of the Bible. The New City Catechism, created by Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, asks 52 questions, one for each week of the year, on topics such as God, creation, and salvation. Each video provides an extended answer to the question from either a pastor at Redeemer or council members of the Gospel Coalition. This video with Thabiti Anyabwile, a pastor at Anacostia River Church in the Washington, D.C. area, answers the question, "What does God require in the ninth and tenth commandments?”

James 2:8 (ESV)

We can respond to question twelve with the following answer: ninth, that we do not lie or deceive, but speak the truth in love. Tenth, that we are content, not envying anyone or resenting what God has given them or us.

Thabiti said the ninth commandment tells us to tame the tongue with truth. We shouldn’t covet because it ruins our hearts, hurts our neighbor, and harms our relationship with God. What stands out to you the most about this answer? Why?
