Q23: Why Must the Redeemer be Truly God?

New City Catechism: Question 23

Christians practice catechesis to instruct believers on the foundational truths of the Christian faith. In a question and answer format, this form of discipleship teaches the Apostle’s Creed, the Ten Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer, along with the basics of the Bible. The New City Catechism, created by Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, asks 52 questions, one for each week of the year, on topics such as God, creation, and salvation. Each video provides an extended answer to the question from either a pastor at Redeemer or council members of the Gospel Coalition. This video with Leo Schuster, Lead Pastor of City Church in Houston, Texas, answers the question, "Why must the Redeemer be truly God?”

Acts 2:24 (ESV)

24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.

We can respond to question twenty-three with the following answer: that because of His divine nature His obedience and suffering would be perfect and effective; and also that He would be able to bear the righteous anger of God against sin and yet overcome death.

Leo said along with being fully man, Jesus is fully God. His divinity allowed Him to live a perfect life, devoid of sin, so He could be a blameless sacrifice. What stands out to you the most about this answer? Why?

Without Jesus’ divinity, He was simply a good teacher. Since Jesus is God, He never sinned, endured the wrath of God, and overcame death.
