Seek Revival

A Gracious Gift from God

Christian history is littered with accounts of revival, but should the church seek it today? If so, what does it mean to pursue God's work of revival? Timothy Keller, Founding Pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, sits down with Dr. D.A. (Don) Carson, Research Professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, to discuss how Christians should seek revival and reflects on some of the ways they have each experienced it throughout their own ministerial efforts.

Timothy referred to revival as, "The intensification of the ordinary operations of the Holy Spirit." In other words, true revival bears the usual marks of Christianity (conviction of sin, conversion, assurance, sanctification), but in an escalated manner. Does this fit with the ways you have thought about revival up to this point? If not, what are the differences? In what ways might you need to adjust your views on the possibility of revival for where God has placed you?

In the end, revival is a gracious gift of God, but we are called to seek it and prepare for it. Some of the ways we do this are through faithful preaching of the gospel, committed prayer, and modeling the renewed life for others. As a leader in the church, are these qualities your people see in you? What are some areas in which your desire for revival needs to mature? What steps will you take to grow in these areas in the coming weeks?

Revival is not something we can systematize. No amount of programming or packaging will create an authentic experience of revival among a population. Rather, Christians are called to build the altar and ask God to send down the fire. He has tasked His children with the responsibility of preaching His gospel and invites us to participate with Him as He breathes new life into those who are lost. May your heart be one committed to pursuing revival where God has placed you. Teach the gospel with prayer and faithful consistency and trust God to bring about fruitfulness as a result
