Q29: How Can We Be Saved?

New City Catechism: Question 29

Christians practice catechesis to instruct believers on the foundational truths of the Christian faith. In a question and answer format, this form of discipleship teaches the Apostle’s Creed, the Ten Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer, along with the basics of the Bible. The New City Catechism, created by Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, asks 52 questions, one for each week of the year, on topics such as God, creation, and salvation. Each video provides an extended answer to the question from either a pastor at Redeemer or council members of the Gospel Coalition. This video with Kevin DeYoung, Senior Pastor at University Reformed Church in East Lansing, Michigan, answers the question, "How can we be saved?”

Ephesians 2:8-9 (ESV)

8For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

We can respond to question twenty-nine with the following answer: only by faith in Jesus Christ and in His substitutionary atoning death on the cross; so even though we are guilty of having disobeyed God and are still inclined to all evil, nevertheless, God, without any merit of our own but only by pure grace, imputes to us the perfect righteousness of Christ when we repent and believe in Him.

Kevin said Jesus saves us when we put our faith in Him. We inherit Christ’s righteousness, evade the penalty of sin through belief in Jesus. What stands out to you the most about this answer? Why?

Faith involves trust, repentance, and action. When we trust Christ with our lives, believe He saves us, and surrender our lives to Him, He blesses us with salvation and right standing before God.
