What is Human Freedom?

True Freedom in Christ

To some, freedom can mean civil liberty. To others, freedom means license to do whatever they want. Christianity, however, argues only Jesus can provide real freedom. Dr. Ligon Duncan, Chancellor and CEO of Reformed Theological Seminary, defines freedom and what it means to find freedom in Jesus.

Ligon defined freedom as the ability to do what you want to do. He explained two theological approaches to freedom:

  1. No external influences on decisions
  2. Every decision has many external influences

What is the difference between these two freedoms? Which one do you agree with? Why?

Ligon said we are free to sin, but that is not real freedom. Real freedom comes from God. He argued that God must change our desires before we can enjoy His freedom.

Do you agree that the only way we can experience God’s freedom is if He changes our desires? Why or why not? How is God’s freedom different from the freedom to sin?

Jesus gives us true freedom. He allows us to love and obey Him, free from sin, shame, and death. Thank God for the freedom He gives us through Christ and walk in that freedom.
