What is Heaven Like?

More Real Than Ever Before

Is heaven in the sky with clouds and angels? Is it a city with streets of gold? Dr. Ed Welch, counselor and faculty member at Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation (CCEF), describes heaven as a place of perfection we can hardly even imagine.

Ed Welch has been counseling for over 30 years and has written extensively on the topics of depression, fear, and addictions. He is the author of When People Are Big and God is Small, Addictions: A Banquet in the Grave, Blame it on the Brain, Depression—A Stubborn Darkness, and When I Am Afraid: A Step-by-Step Guide Away from Fear and Anxiety.

Ed describes heaven in two primary ways:

  • where the Lord’s dwelling is with men
  • where human beings will be sinless and growing in perfect love

Revelation 21:1-4 (ESV)

The New Heaven and the New Earth

1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.2And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

1 John 3:1-2 (ESV)

1See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.2Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.

Ed referenced 1 John 3 and said that when we are in heaven, we will be like God. We will be without sin. What sin in your life can you not imagine being without? Take a minute to thank God that some day you won’t feel the weight of that sin anymore.

Ed said that not only will be sinless, but like God, we will also love people deeply from the heart. We will have perfect love that grows, and we will consider the interests of others more than our own.

Describe a time when you had an enormous amount of love for someone. Now multiply that by ten and imagine its being only a smidgen of what’s possible. Take another minute to thank God for making that kind of love possible in you some day.

It’s impossible to fully fathom what heaven will be like, but isn’t it fun to think about? Our God is compassionate, gracious, and abounding in love (Psalm 103:8). When He dwells fully with us, there’s no telling how beautiful heaven will be!
