God Uses Work to Impact Communities

2015 Work as Worship Conference

Since the beginning, God has guided human history through a particular narrative, namely, that of bringing all things into unity under Jesus Christ, including the realm of work. God has placed the business world in a unique position to leverage its resources and profit to change the lives of people. In order to accomplish this, organizations need a clear vision and a motivated mission. In this 22-minute session from the 2015 Work as Worship Conference, Will Haughey describes how God gave him a burden for the people of Honduras leading him to leave a career on Wall Street to create a new business venture.

Will is the Co-Founder and Chief "Blockhead" of Tegu, a toy company based out of Honduras that sells magnetized wooden block sets. He and his brother launched their business in 2006 out of a desire to help meet the needs of Honduran poverty. Since then, it has grown to support hundreds of employees and has been featured nationally on TODAY, People Magazine, and The Oprah Magazine.

Work holds a unique potential for transforming lives. God calls all Christians to use their influence for the good of others. The workplace provides critical opportunities to serve those in need.

Will shared how his childhood exposure to poor communities during mission trips contributed to his compassion for impoverished people today. As you look back on your own story, what are some significant influences in your life (events, people, locations, etc.)? In what ways have they marked you today?

Christians are called to live for more than merely personal gain. According to these verses, God's plan is to unite all things in Christ, which means that our work points to a greater purpose, namely, Jesus Christ. In what ways does your life reflect a commitment to His plan? How does your workplace reflect it? What are some ways you would like to improve?

As Will shared, Ephesians 2:1-9 tells how God has "activated" Christians for His purpose of uniting all things in Christ. Verse 10 explains the details of that purpose, namely, a life given over in service to God. Can you identify the "good works" God has called you into? Are there any ways you are hesitating in your commitment to His service? If so, why?

Every Christian plays a part in God's work of bringing all things in heaven and on earth into unity under Christ. He has appointed all of His children to good works that He prepared beforehand and He will sustain us and provide for us until He brings His plan to an end. Until then, commit your life boldly to God's purposes by pursuing impactful service for those He has placed in your midst.
