Holy Spirit Empowered Ministry

2015 RightNow Conference

We often need God more than we think we do. In this 38-minute session from the 2015 RightNow Conference, Dr. Eric Mason unpacks Ephesians 5:15–20 to show us how to embrace a Holy Spirit empowered life and ministry. Eric is Lead Pastor of Epiphany Fellowship in Philadelphia, President of Thriving Ministries, and the author of three books including Unleashed and Manhood Restored

Describe a time in your life and/or ministry when you trusted more in your own strength and resources than God. What happened? How did God show you your need for Him?

Ephesians 5:15-20 (ESV)

15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.17Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.18And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,19addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart,20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Eric described how to have a Holy Spirit empowered ministry:
  1. Resolve to live a life of discernment (v. 15)
  2. Resolve to maximize every season He gives you (vv. 16–17)
  3. Resolve that God will be the strongest influence in your life (v. 18)
  4. Worship the living God (v.19)

What might you find or discern if you took time to “look carefully” at your own heart and ministry? How could you do this? How have you grown in wisdom as a believer?

Where has God called you to serve? What gifts, experiences, and resources has He given you to make change there? Are you making the “best use” of those things? If not, what more could you do?

Eric said that the role of the Holy Spirit is to dominate, pressure, and permeate our lives. How have you experienced each of these? Which is the hardest for you to accept and why?

Eric said, “You put up your sail and God will take you where He wants you to go…Some of you have been holding onto some things, holding onto some places, holding onto some people, but God says, I want you to let go of all of that stuff and I want you to throw up your sail because I have some wind coming over your head. And the forecast of where I want to take you is bigger than where you have reduced yourself to right now.”

What might the Holy Spirit want you to release so you can put up your sail and go with God? What might be holding you back from this, and why?

List a handful of things that move you to worship—nature, books, community, music, etc. How can you do or enjoy more of those things so that you can live a more Spirit-filled life?

Eric said, “The way you get filled with the Spirit is to lift up His name, give Him all the honor, give Him all the glory, give Him all the praise, and let Him fill you up so you can be all that God wants you to be.”
