Help Your Franchisees Win

Their Success Is Your Success

In the particular world of franchise business, two groups have to interact with each other: the franchiser and the franchisees. Cheryl Bachelder, the CEO of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, walked into her current position to find both groups at odds with each other. In this video filmed at the WorkMatters FUSE Forum, Cheryl walks through her experience and offers advice to leaders in the franchise world.

Cheryl was able to turn around Popeyes by focusing her efforts on helping the franchisees succeed. Her servant-leadership model measured the success of the corporate office by the success of the franchise owners.

As a franchiser, how would you describe your relationship (or the corporate relationship at large) with the franchise owners? What has contributed to the health or weakness of that relationship?

Servant leadership not only serves, but it seeks to replicate itself in others. For Cheryl, simply serving the franchisees wasn't the end of her goals. She currently strives to help them become better at serving the individual employees and guests in each franchised store.

How would you describe your leadership model? Would you want to replicate it in your franchisees? Why or why not?

Franchise owners and corporate headquarters can find themselves shooting for different goals. Cheryl found that, when she aimed to help the franchisees achieve their own goals, everyone benefited. As you evaluate your leadership approach to franchise owners, strive to prioritize a servant's attitude.
