Counsel from the Cross

2012 The Gospel Coalition Women's Conference

In this 59-minute session from the 2012 TGC Women’s Conference, Elyse Fitzpatrick encourages women to rest in the righteousness of Jesus and fatherly love of God. Elyse Fitzpatrick has a Masters in biblical counseling. She is a frequent conference speaker and the author of 21 books including Give them Grace, Because He Loves Me, and Good News for Weary Women.

Elyse quoted B.B. Warfield who said,
There is nothing in us or done by us, at any stage of our earthly development, because of which we are acceptable to God….Our need of Christ does not cease with our believing; nor does the nature of our relation to Him or to God through Him ever alter, no matter what our attainments in Christian graces or our achievements in behavior may be. It is always on his blood and righteousness alone that we can rest.

What things do you feel like you have to do to be accepted and loved by God? If you never did any of those things again, do you think God would still accept and love you? Why or why not?

What might it look like for you to rest in the blood and righteousness of Jesus instead of your own attempts to earn the love of God? How different would your life look if you could do that?

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.
(Ephesians 4:32–5:1, ESV)

How do the declarations in these verses that you are forgiven in Christ and a beloved child of God help you live out the imperatives to show kindness, forgiveness, and imitate God?

How do you approach God? Do you believe that He is a good Father who loves, delights, and protects his children? Or do you come to Him fearful of His anger and disappointment? Who or what has shaped your view of God as Father?

How did this teaching equip you to counsel women who might be burdened by sin and shame, or overwhelmed by their roles and responsibilities? How will you encourage them?

Father, you are good. Help us to believe that we are your children, loved and forgiven in Christ. And that there is nothing we could ever do to earn your acceptance. Fill our hearts with the truth that you see us just as if we had never sinned and always obeyed. We believe, but help our unbelief. Amen.
