Preserving the Gospel

2012 The Gospel Coalition Women’s Conference

In this 43-minute session from the 2012 TGC Women’s Conference, Don Carson unpacks 2 Timothy 1 to explain how to preserve the gospel for future generations.  Don is a New Testament scholar and professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He is also the co-founder and president of The Gospel Coalition and author of numerous books including The God Who is There and The Intolerance of Tolerance.

Don shared six ways to preserve the gospel based on 2 Timothy 1:

  1. Fan into flame what you received (vv. 3–7)
  2. Maintain a clear grasp of the value of the gospel (vv. 8–11)
  3. Maintain a willingness to suffer for the gospel (v. 8)
  4. Maintain the mandate to guard the gospel (vv. 13–14)
  5. Distinguish the betrayers and supporters of the gospel (vv. 15–18)
  6. Work hard at passing on the gospel (2:1)

Timothy came to trust God through the faithfulness of his mother and grandmother. How did you come to faith in Christ? Who "worked out the gospel in observable ways" for you, and how?

Don said, “One of the most dangerous things we face today in the Western world is that the gospel becomes something merely assumed.” How do people know you are a follower of Christ? Do you communicate its centrality in your life, or could it be left to the assumption of others? In what ways could you fan the gospel into flame so that it burns brighter than everything else?

Lord, help us to treasure the gospel in our hearts, proclaim the good news to others, and be intentional about preserving it for future generations.
