Practicing Prayer

2014 The Gospel Coalition Women’s Conference

In this 46-minute session from the 2014 The Gospel Coalition Women’s Conference, author and speaker Jani Ortlund describes the purpose of prayer, challenging women to take it seriously and encouraging them of its benefits.

Jani Ortlund is a well-known conference speaker and author of Fearlessly Feminine and His Loving Law, Our Lasting Legacy. She also serves as the Executive Vice President of Renewal Ministries.

How would you describe your prayer life today? Who or what are you praying for? Do you feel intimacy with God, or distant from Him?

Jani shared three reasons why prayer can be hard to sustain:
1. We are busy.
2. We feel like prayer doesn’t work.
3. We are not sure what to say.

Which have been true for you? When have you felt like you were too busy? When has prayer felt useless? When have you been lost for words?

Isaiah 62:6-7 (ESV)

6On your walls, O Jerusalem,

I have set watchmen;

all the day and all the night

they shall never be silent.

You who put the Lord in remembrance,

take no rest,

7and give him no rest

until he establishes Jerusalem

and makes it a praise in the earth.

Jani used Isaiah 62:6–7 to explain that prayer is:
  1. Divinely appointed
  2. Prophetic
  3. Persistent
  4. Strenuous
  5. Rude
  6. Patient

Jani described believers as “prophetic watchmen” who engage in battle through prayer. How does this change your perspective on prayer? Does it motivate you to pray? Why or why not?

Jani said, “Everyday faithfulness by ordinary women praying can be God’s grace to change history forever.”  Lord, help us to be faithful.
