Blind Spots

2014 Redeeming Work Conference - Chicago

In this 33-minute session from the 2014 Redeeming Work Conference in Chicago, Skye Jethani calls pastors and church leaders to teach a theology of creation, calling, and consummation that informs and affirms work. Skye Jethani, a former pastor, is Senior Editor of the Leadership Journal and Director of Mission Advancement for Christianity Today.

Skye admitted that as a pastor, he had been blind to the reality of life with full-time job and family. What might be some of your blind spots? How might your teaching be affecting how your congregants view their work?

Skye shared his three theological blind spots:

  1. Theology of Creation
  2. Theology of Calling
  3. Theology of Consummation

Genesis 1:28 (ESV)

28And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

The cultural mandate preceded the marriage mandate, yet most of our preaching and ministries focus on marriage and family roles. How does an understanding of this cultural mandate of work impact the way you approach your work? How might it impact your congregants? What implications does it have for the business executive, plumber, architect, working parent, or young single?

Skye described the three tiers of calling:

  1. Highest Calling: Communion with God through Spirit
  2. Common Calling: Applicable to every Christian in every place
  3. Specific Calling: Unique to individuals

Skye admitted to unintentionally promoting a sacred-secular divide because he did not have a theology of calling. In what ways could you be living this divide? In what ways are you teaching this divide?

Skye said, “God is not going to throw away this planet, He is redeeming it. This extends to every cubicle, every household, every office, school and study. He wants to redeem all things.” How does this impact your perspective on eternity? How might this understanding of the redemption of all things encourage you in your daily work?
