Teaching Students about The Struggle to Change featuring Joshua Harris

Page 1

Our students are faced with temptations that stunt their growing faith. Take a look at this real-life story and think of the students in your group. When Brandon and his friends got bored, they got into trouble.

It's difficult for students to say “no” to their friends, or even choose different friends as they follow Christ. Take some time this week to pray for the student’s in your group. They face countless obstacles and pressures each week from the world to abandon their pursuit of righteousness. How can your encourage them this week?

Joshua Harris is the senior pastor of Covenant Life in Gaithersburg, Maryland and the founder of the NEXT conferences for young adults. As an author and speaker, he’s passionate about making theological truth easy to understand. After listening to Brandon's story, Joshua shows us how he would use Scripture to teach students that there is a cost to following Jesus.

Joshua read Luke 9:23 and said, “There’s a cost to following Jesus…following Jesus means dying to your old desires. It means dying to having your friends love you. It means dying to this world’s definition of success.”
Students would rather hear about victory in Jesus rather than the cost of discipleship.

Has it been worth denying yourself to follow Jesus? Why? How can you explain this truth to your students this week? Is there an example from your own life that you can use to encourage them?

Sanctification is a real battle. But through the struggle, God loves us. Who in your group needs a call or an email this week to encourage them to keep on fighting?

Joshua tells students, “Sanctification isn’t just a matter of not doing wrong. It’s a matter of actively “doing” righteousness. It’s pursuing obedience.”
Challenge your students this week to intentionally pursue righteousness. It may mean changing what they watch on television or how and with whom they spend their time.
