The Branch and Banner of David

2015 TGC National Conference

In this 54-minute session from the 2015 Gospel Coalition National Conference, John Piper works from Isaiah 11, showing both its messianic implications and the great hope it presents in New Creation. John is founder and teacher of DesiringGod.org and chancellor of Bethlehem College and Seminary in Minneapolis, MN. He has authored over 50 books, including Desiring God and Future Grace.

John explained the "prophetic perspective." How does understanding this perspective bring clarity to your study of the prophetic literature in the Bible?

John criticized both the evangelical hesitancy to carefully study biblical prophesy over the past two generations, and the tendency to place a primary focus on prophesy—seeking to read the times and predict Christ's return. Where have you seen these two tendencies present?

John drew three points of application from Isaiah 11:
  1. The Shoot of Jesse is God's saving signal to the nations.
  2. The Shoot of Jesse judges with truth and calls His people to be a people of righteousness and truthfulness.
  3. The Glory of Jesus Christ is our final home.

How are you currently involved in seeing the gospel (God's saving signal) proclaimed to the nations?

When all the work of redemption is done, Jesus—the root and shoot of Jesse—will enter His rest and His home. All who have seen His saving signal will join Him in that rest. "And his resting place shall be glorious." (Isaiah 11:10b)
